India is known by three (3) different names.India derives its name from INDUS.The Indian Sub-Continent is Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires. The Greeks in ancient times referred to Indians as INDOI which when translated means”The people of Indus”.”Bharata” is the founder of the Bharata dynasty and a legendary emperor.India has been called Bharatavarṣha (the country of Bharata) after the Great King and Bharat is an official name of the Republic of India. This geographical term Bharat, which is recognised by the Constitution of India as an official name for the country,is used by many Indian languages in its variations. It is a modernisation of the historical name Bharatavarsha. Gaṇarājya is the Sanskrit/Hindi term for “republic” dating back to the ancient times.Hindustan is an ancient Persian name given to India around 3 Century BC. This was introduced by the Mughal Rulers and has been used quite often since then. The meaning of Hindustan is being thought of as ” The Land of the Hindus”
Then arrived the British Era.The British East India Company was formed for trade with Asia. In this regard they established its first factory at Machilipatnam in 1611, the company slowly and gradually acquired unequaled trade privileges from Mughal Emperors. The interference of the British in the Indian political scene gradually increased and the Indian rulers just played into their hands. This obviously led to the decline of the Indian rulers and after the Indian Mutiny of 1857,the East India Company was abolished in 1858 and rule assumed directly by the British crown. Then began the Indian Independence Struggle initiated by Mohandas Karamdas Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi as he is known by the entire world and many other leaders and finally India attained Independence on 15th August 1947.India was formally declared a Republic upon the promulgation of its constitution on 26th January 1950.
