Arrival at the Destination
Continuing from where we left off in my previous post…
EXITING THE AEROPLANE
The plane has landed smoothly and has come to a halt at its designated parking space.Once a clearance signal is obtained, the Jet Bridge is again attached to the aircraft. The doors of the plane will be opened only after this bridge is in placed in correctly and help each traveller to exit the aircraft in an organised manner.
In the last few minutes before landing the flight attendants hand you an Arrival Card or a Disembarkation Card. You are required to complete this and keep it along with with the Passport to be presented at Immigration. Some Airlines may be not all of them, allow the exit in the order of the seating, similar to the Boarding pattern at the time of Departure.i.e.Senior travellers, mothers with infants and special need travellers may be asked to exit first followed by First and Business Class passengers. The last of the gang to leave the plane are the Economy or Coach Class travellers.
IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS
You need to pass through Immigration and Customs in the Country of arrival too before heading to collect your baggage.Keeping your landing card along the same place as your passport will save you time when you get to Immigration Control Desk. Immigration at arrival is a measure to check the authorised and legal entry of foreign travellers into their country.Hence you need to present your passport, visa and your landing card. This applies to one and all, local Citizens and foreigners arriving on an International flight.Hence you will find two queues in front of the Immigration desk-one for the Local Residents and one for Foreigners.Make sure you join the correct queue. If in doubt, you may ask for help. The Immigration Officer behind the glassed cubicle will look at your passport and check your Visa/Entry Clearance for his Country.Generally he/she will scan your passport and run through the details mentioned in your Landing Card and make sure you have all the rights to enter his/her Country. The officer may ask you a few questions and seek more information about your visit to this country before giving you the final permission to enter the Country.Hence please keep any documents relevant to your stay in your hand luggage, so they are easily available if the officer asks for them. This may include your travel itinerary, business visa, work permit, or university or sponsorship letter. The officer will stamp the arrival date on the Arrival Card or Disembarkation Card and on the passport (in most cases) on the page next to the Visa page. Before leaving Immigration Control Desk, please ensure and confirm that the Immigration Officer has stamped the Passport with the correct details.
After you receive your Passport from the Immigration Control Desk, you should proceed to the the Baggage collection area to collect your Baggage from the Baggage Claim area. The Baggage collection area is a large room with many moving belts called “Carousels”.The Checked Baggage kept in the Baggage Hold of the plane is unloaded onto these belts. The Bags keep moving on the belts. Each belt is numbered and carries Baggage arriving from all flights at the Airport. The belt corresponding to your flight number and the destination arrived from will be displayed on the monitor screens in the Baggage Area. Please wait patiently for your bag or bags to appear on the belt.Once you have identified your bags and see it moves towards you, please get the bags off the Carousel belt quickly.Check if all your bags have arrived and are in proper order as they were placed at the time of Departure. If you find any damage or tampering of any of your bags, report it to the Airline representative or Customer Support desk and get an acknowledgement from the Airline in writing as to what will the compensation be and how is it going to reach you.Load all your bags in the Baggage Trolleys placed in the Baggage Area.
There are times when your baggage does not arrive at the Destination. This may be due to many reasons. If you are unable to see your bag till the end, when the Carousel stops,do not panic. You can fill in a Lost/Delayed Baggage form with the airline you travelled. You have to present the copy of the Baggage Tag attache to your ticket at the time of Departure when you checked in your bags. This tag helps the airline track and trace the bags. If the bags have been left behind (by the airline) and are placed on the next flight then chances are you could have them within a few hours. But if they have reached a different Airport, then it could take a couple of days. Please ensure to file your claim immediately at the airport and to give the attendant a hotel or home address, as well as a phone number where you can be reached.Ask the airline if they can help you with some allowance to claim for emergency purchases of essential items like clothes and toiletries that you will need till you have received the bag. Also check if there is any provision for such emergencies in your Travel Insurance
Bags not arriving with your flight is absolutely not a good idea especially on your First Flight. There are a few instances which happen once in a while. The airlines have their own ways to track the Baggage and in majority of these cases the bags are reunited with the travellers in a span of 48 hours or less.
Next, proceed towards Customs after you have collected all the pieces of Baggage. As explained in the last post.Customs is the authority in our country or the respective country you enter that is responsible for controlling the flow of goods, including animals, transports, foods, personal effects, goods of high value like jewels and precious stones, electronic items, illegal, contraband and hazardous items, into and out of a country.Custom clearance at most airports of the world have mainly two exits known as “channels”-Red and Green Channel.
Green Channel – for passengers not having any dutiable goods or other items for which declaration is not required.
Red Channel – for travellers carrying restricted and dutiable goods or any other items for which declaration is required. All the travellers must file correct declaration of their baggage.Walking through the Green Channel with dutiable / prohibited/ restricted goods by passengers is an offence which may result in seizure, confiscation, prosecution/arrest and penal action.Forms or the Custom Card on which to make the declaration will be available on your arrival. Please complete the form and deposit it with the authorities. You should be given a copy of the completed form, which you should keep safely as evidence that you have made a declaration. Please ask for a copy if you are not given one.
ARRIVING AT THE ARRIVAL HALL AND EXITING THE AIRPORT
Customs check is the last stop in the detailed procedure after you arrive at the Destination.Once this is complete, you have to proceed towards the Arrival Hall and finally exit the Airport. The steel trolley used to load the bags can be used to get the bags till outside. After you cross this area you will not be allowed to re-enter the baggage collection area.
Here at this point you will find many counters for local transport, car hire providers, local sim card providers and travel companies with packages for a local tour. If somebody or a friend has come to receive you will find them at the waiting area outside the Arrival hall..If not you can also enquire for public transport such as trains and buses if you wish to reach to a particular area in the city. You will also find hotel shuttles which provides airport to hotel transfers sometimes complimentary with the hotel reservation, else at an additional charge. If you have booked a car through a car rental company then you should be able to find their representative in the car hire station or stand in the waiting area.
If you wish to hire a taxi then please be informed that there are two types of taxis operating from the airport:
♦The normal metered taxis:These are not recommended as you are not sure what you expect. These may be unlicensed taxi drivers who can rip you off by charging you a high taxi fare. This definitely is not the ideal way to start a trip in a Foreign Land.
♦The prepaid official taxis:Without doubt this should be the right choice. Please use the prepaid taxis because you will be sure what are you going to pay prior contracting it and you will receive an official receipt for the amount paid. You do not need pay a single penny after this.
The counter to buy the ticket for prepaid taxis is also located at the exit of the customs area and beginning of the Arrival Hall
